What You Should Know About Alcohol Addiction Treatment

When you struggle with an alcohol use disorder or an alcohol addiction, it can feel like you are stuck in a situation that you cannot pull yourself out of. However, alcohol addiction is not a death sentence, and there are options available to help you overcome your alcohol issues. If you are looking to overcome your alcohol addiction, get to know some of the facts about alcohol addiction treatment that can help you in your pursuit of recovery. Then, you can be sure that you choose the right option for you.

Alcohol Addiction Treatment Takes Different Forms

One of the facts to know and understand about alcohol addiction treatment is that it can come in various forms. The most intensive means of alcoholism treatment is inpatient treatment. When a person goes into an inpatient program, they will spend 24 hours a day in the rehab center. This allows them to be under constant supervision and to have 24/7 support from staff members who are there to help them through detox and recovery.

Intensive outpatient or partial hospitalization programs are a step lower in program intensity. These are essentially day treatment programs that involve being in treatment for about six to eight hours of the day. Most often, these programs are on weekdays only. They offer a great deal of structure while allowing recovering alcoholics to sleep at home and have weekends free.

The third option is outpatient treatment. Most outpatient treatment programs involve three to five hours of treatment a week. This type of program is the most flexible and gives people the most freedom with their time. However, because there is so much free time, a person can easily relapse while going through treatment.

Not All Programs Are 12-Step Programs

The most commonly recognized type of alcohol addiction treatment is the 12 Steps of Recovery that originated with Alcoholics Anonymous. These programs are so popular because they can be highly effective both in and out of the treatment center. However, if you have tried the 12 Steps before and have found it does not work for you, there are other options available as well.

Moral Reconation Therapy (MRT), for example, is a form of addiction treatment that involves a focus on positive self-image and on building a person's ability to judge situations and make decisions according to their own sense of morality. The idea is that by improving a person's self-image and moral reasoning, the person will be able to better deal with temptations, cravings, and other addiction symptoms.

There are also other types of alcohol addiction treatment including spiritual therapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy, family counseling, and more.

Now that you know a bit more about your alcohol addiction treatment options, you can better decide which type of treatment is right for you.
